No More Living Life Behind the Computer Keyboard
That title makes no sense right? How do you live life behind a keyboard? This is my point! I am done spending my life behind a keyboard. I’m not giving up being a blogger by any means. However, I am going to start getting out of my house more and telling all of you about what is going on in my world.
What Made me Decide This
I truly believe it is Facebook envy. Yes, I truly believe that is a real thing. See, I am friends with people from all of the world on Facebook. I see them posting all the time wonderful adventurous pictures of fun once in a lifetime experiences. Yeah, okay…I kinda exaggerated that part. Most of them are no once in a lifetime experiences but, they are out there living life!
So What Is My First Goal
My first goal is to get in shape. I have been telling myself for awhile that I will be in shape by the time I turn 40. Why 40? Well, my youngest son was scheduled to start kindergarten in two years and after he started kindergarten that would give me one year to get in shape. Yes, if you are doing math I will be 38 years old this year. I am still 37 and hanging on to that for another month right now by the way.
Well, my youngest son was accepted into the pre-K program which has him starting a school a year early! So now I can start my first goal now.
How Am I Going To Do It
I thought about this for a while. I could walk on my treadmill at home but, that is still me staying in my house. I need something that is fun and interactive with other people! A plain old gym membership is not going to get me interacting with other people. I can’t afford a private trainer.
I found a local gym that offers fun interactive engaging exercise with a trainer in a group setting. Perfect! I saw a promotion on their Facebook page for a beginner’s promotion and signed up. No more excuses.
My First Steps
I went shopping for workout clothes. I was going to say ‘new’ workout clothes but, being honest I don’t have any workout clothes in house that I actually use for working out in anymore. Don’t let this picture full you! I think workout clothes make anyone look good. Currently I am a size 14, okay maybe getting up to a 16.
This evening is my first exercise class!

I have lived life behind a keyboard. That changed a month ago when I was diagnosed with lung cancer. I no longer feel the need to check my Facebook for messages or friends status updates. Emails are no longer answered right away, tweets are less, and Pinterest is really just a place to put things/ideas you will probably never do or use. My day used to start with a cup of coffee and my PC. By the time I checked my email and Facebook a good 1/4 of my day was gone. Live…because you don’t know what you might be missing out on and you you don’t know if you will have tomorrow.
Oh Joni, I am so sorry you have lung cancer. I hope you can fight and win! Thank you for leaving such and inspiring comment!
Good luck! I stay away from face book. twitter, all of that. I spend too much time on the computer deleting junk mail, entering contests… Basically, wasting away hours that could and should be spent doing other more productive things.
Good luck! Hope you achieve your goals
That sounds like a great idea, it’s important to do things in “the real world” and not just sitting inside on the computer; I know that’s something I need to do myself. I hope you have fun at your exercise class! 🙂
I applaud your initiative, efforts, & ideas. Just because everyone else has succumbed to a 24 hour life online doesn’t mean everyone has to. Things really did use to be a lot simpler. I miss people’s overall desire to communicate in person , & face-to-face.
8 hope your evening class went well and am looking forward to,updates.
My first class did go well and it kicked my butt!!! I went three times last week and hope to go at least that many this week.
That’s awesome! I hope you can do this! Too often we forget there is a world out there!!!
You need to find some exercise that you enjoy doing. For me, it’s swimming 3 times a week.
You can do it! I’ve come to the same realization that most of my life is spent behind a keyboard and not truly living. One of my main goals for 2015 was to put down the phone or computer and get out.
Good for you!!! I’ve been working on this same thing myself!! You’re an inspiration.
I am doing the same thing, I realize I spend about 10 to 12 hrs a day on a computer, I never thought about it before but I do .. Sadly I realized my life going at a stand still, so I also decided I want more out of my life before I leave this planet.. SO come June 1st I am cutting off 6 hours of it and going to start walking, maybe join the YMCA and get out and meet other people.. Anyway. Good Luck on your journey and I will keep you in my prayers..
I hope your first class is terrific fun! Good for you!!! Nothing wrong with being a homebody but everyone needs to get out, have some fun, exercise and socialize. I think you are really gonna be happy with your decision. I am sort of housebound while I am pregnant…..and because my son has autism. I am going to a baby shower today…that’s my fun for the week. lol
Way to go! I need to do the same, I spend WAY too much time online.
I appreciate the inside on this issue. I am glad that you are addressing this and doing something about getting it together.
I’m also guilty of living life ‘behind the keyboard’, I’ve started running with my dog and basically trying to get outside and experience more of real life haha.
I still spend my life on my computer, I have so many obligations and not quite ready to give it up. I have backed off of Facebook a bit, I still use it for blog stuff. Last October I decided to change my life a bit. I am 61 and having many medical conditions including Diabetes. I was insulin dependent with my sugar levels high. A year ago my A1C was at 10. Since I get a free YMCA membership, I decided that it was time for a change. With diet and exercise I have lost 65 lbs, pretty much off insulin, A1C is at a 5.9, I count calories. So long story short, I still have health issues that will never go away but I do feel so much better in a lot of ways, I am pretty much stress free. It helps that I don’t work anymore but I feel so much better about myself. Keep up the good work with whatever goals you may set, it will pay off in the end!!
Sounds to me like you have a pretty good plan. Good luck and stay healthy….
I know I spend way too much time on Twitter! At least I have cut down on Facebook which I hardly look at these days. I also decided this week to get back to fitness. My goal is 3 times per week. Good luck with your training.
this inspire me to give myself a break.
This is awesome! I feel like I should do the same!
I live behind the keyboard these days, too. I need to get out more and enjoy the days, but in Florida, it is just too hot to enjoy a walk. It’s suppose to be in the upper 90s today. I would probably fall out before I got started good.
I need to try to get out from behind the keyboard, and you have given me some inspiration to do so. I thank you for the advice.
Those clothes do look great. And good luck to you with the work out goals. Also, I have to say, hear hear! for not living behind the keyboard. I made the decision to do that too, and it was a good one. 🙂
I’m trying to pull away from the computer a little more each week but it’s hard, lol! It takes up way too much time out of my life. I’m going to try to follow your lead. Fingers crossed!
I am so happy for the decision you made. I am looking forward to some great articles about what you have been doing and seeing. Thank you for sharing
i do sit here a lot but now that i am getting to ready to move again i am moving to house i can afford and that mean clean this 3 bed room house and then move to 3 bed room house one level
so we will be here for couple of week and then move and sart over again
Sounds like you’ve got a great plan! It was smart to buy some new workout clothes that you feel comfortable in.
How wonderful and getting up and exercising is wonderful, does giving up the key board also mean the phones, that I am amazed that people even use them in public restrooms, no longer do people ever get away from their social connections, my phone is only good for making and receiving phone calls and I rarely turn it on unless in car or on a trip, I think your goals are wonderful and I hope all goes well for you
I totally get it. I was spending way too much time in the house, on the computer. I finally decided I needed to get back out and start doing more. I make sure to walk daily and I go out a lot more with my family now too.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey to becoming fit by 40!!! When I was 37, I lost 50 pounds! But, 6 months later…it all came back! Now, I am 40, and really couldn’t care less about what I look like!!! It just gets more and more difficult as the years go by…so, I’m done!
I hope your inspiration has remained steadfast and you are making progress toward your goals. I’ve had similar goals and similar amounts of inspiration, but have had several long term illnesses deter me somewhat. But it is something I still aim to do. After all, what is better for my long term illnesses than to get my body in the best shape that I can. I am close to turning 60. Maybe I can get things going before this milestone passes.
It is all about balance. Good luck to you on your goals. I have been setting goals to improve the house.
Great job on achieving your goals!!! I set a few goals at a time, if I set too many at once, it’s hard to reach them!
I have also been riding my Harley and taking more trips. My wife has been volunteering with a local dog group in addition to riding with me.
How I wish I can do the same. We are making a living behind the keyboard so yeah, this one seems impossible for me, for now.
i go thru periods where i cant stand to get on the pc, i have so many other things to do and never get them done b/c i am entering contests or reading my boatloads of emails. i hate it. it is so time consuming especially since i have a lousy internet service by verizon, home fusion and it cost over 200 per month. no other options where i live.
Thank you for writing this inspiring article. I, too, will be making quality time to spend with my family and addressing my needs.
Good Luck in this new venture.
I totally agree with you. Living life behind a keyboard is not a good thing for anyone. I make sure to monitor my computer time just to make sure I do some living also.
wow this is powerful article i have to admit i stay beind computer alot. lot of days i need to relax and go out. this article makes me want to do better
Stick with it! Hopefully it will make you feel great all the time!
I spend so much time behind a keyboard too. It is an unhealthy lifestyle and I have to make myself move away sometimes.
I am with you on this. I spend all day at my job sitting behind a computer screen and keyboard, and I feel like I hardly ever get the chance to disconnect anymore. I have a gym membership, but I only spend about 40 minutes to an hour there each weekday. I want to get outside more or be more social, so those are a couple of my goals this year. I’m happy to hear that you’ve started on your fitness goal! It can be a little difficult to get into the swing of things at first, but all of the benefits are worth it. 🙂
I must admit, I know how you feel in terms of feeling trapped in terms of having to constantly rely on the Internet and modern technology. I would give anything to have back several non-Internet sources of fun, like MTV really standing for ‘Music Television’ and reading “Premiere” magazine.
