Each winter I always do two things. First, I pick up the #1 pharmacist recommended cough/cold/flu combinations, daytime medicine Advil® Cold & Sinus for fast, powerful relief for the worst cold symptoms and Robitussin® DM Max Strength because I do not have time for a cough in my schedule! I head to Walgreens because I know someone in my family will need them during the winter months! If you are heading out make sure to follow both of those links to take advantage of up to $8 in coupon savings.

Next, I do one of my favorite DIY projects! They are so stinking cute!! Every winter I find sweaters in my closet that are worn out or out of style. Instead of tossing or donating them, I make a pair of cozy, warm mittens from my outdated or old sweater in under 30 minutes! This morning I decided to make mittens from an old red sweater! Now, I can enjoy winter in style and still stay warm!

DIY Sweater Into Mittens

You do not need a pattern for the way I create these mittens. They are super easy to make!

What you need:

  • An old sweater
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Marker
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine or Sewing Needle

Directions:

Fold your sweater inside out. Then trace your hand along the edge of the sweater. Do this for both your left and right hand. Add about a half-inch all the way around your hand to allow for seams. Make sure to line your wrist up on the bottom of the sweater where the pattern changes. This will create a great cuff for your mittens.

Secure the front and back layers together with several straight pins along inside edges. This will ensure the two layers will stay even while you’re stitching or sewing. Then, cut out your traced mitten, leaving about an inch or two of fabric around it.

Thread your needle and do a simple running stitch along your tracing or use a sewing machine.

Trim about a quarter-inch around the stitching to remove the excess fabric.

Now the fun part! Flip the mitten inside out to see your finished product.

Do the same steps for your second mitten.

Awesome way to upcycle and recycle clothes you’re not wearing anymore! I wish I still had my sewing machine!
